Why we can't get enough of concrete

Where do we begin? 2018 has seen a phenomenal year in the world of concrete, and it’s not hard to see why. Whether it’s a seamless polished floor or beautifully curved walls, it’s a material that is so incredibly versatile, that it creates new possibilities. We are biased perhaps, but concrete really does give the wow factor.

This year has seen a love for concrete grow in interior decor too, from furniture such as tables and stools to lighting and vases, and the love affair is set to continue into 2019. Living Etc., for example, has marked concrete bathrooms in their list of ‘Top Trends for 2019’ (see full article here: https://www.livingetc.com/whats-news/the-biggest-18-19-interior-trends-195539 ) and last month’s Elle Decoration ran a feature in their August issue on a concrete home, which was inspired by 20th-Century Brutalist buildings and ancient Mayan temples (article not available online, but well worth a read if you can locate a copy). Bespoke kitchen islands are also set to continue to take centre stage next year, especially in ultra-modern, minimalist kitchens.

So why is concrete so coveted? Well, the textural and tonal qualities of concrete are so desirable due to its versatility. It can be any colour, brushed or polished, with or without exposed aggregate. It can be poured and polished to create beautiful contemporary edges and curves, no skirting necessary for example or threshold strips, making it an ideal choice for open concept living. Once finished and sealed, it is also remarkably easy to clean and maintain.
